Address: THE NUNG LICET PRESS 42 West Coulter Street PHILADELPHIA, - PA, lly our reyulai* correspondent. A mossa«j:e received here con veyed the news that Miss Mary Erwin, sister of Marcus Erwin Clerlv of the Superior court of this county, has died in St. Au gustine. Fla. Miss P^rwiii had been ill for a lon^- time and her death was not unlooked for. The deceased had a number of friends and relatives here and was b(*- loved by all w'ho knew’ her. In terment took ])lace in St. Auj^us tine. Judf^e W. H. Allen wlio is t(^ preside at this term of Superioi* coui’t is reported to be (juite sick and there is some doubt, as to whether he will be able to hold court on scliedule time or not. Julia Benson the ne^jro w'oman who had Tom Bracey a wiiite man arrested on the charge of attempted criminal assault was herself ari-ested on a w’urrjint char<>:ing assault with a deadly weapon on the said Tom Bracey and taxed :?^17.50 in police court the other day. The police records for tl*e iTKjnth of .January show ar rests with a total sum collected in lines and costs of sl.o9i!.4(). This is about si,000 over the amount collected in tlie same month last year by the police de partment. .Judge Pritchard has gom' to Richmond where he will sit or. the liencii of the Uuited States Circuit Court of A{)peals which convenes February 6th. Two of the most important cases from Western North Cai'olina to be M.r- gued will be Thomason vs. the j Southern Railway Company, and it is stated tiiat a decision in th<^ case of Maj. Wm. p]. Bi-eese w’ill be handed down at this term. The revenue collections for January show a decided decrease over last year the total amount being According to the records in Collector Harkins oftice. Ttie figures of course are for this Western North Carolina district only. Joe Scales, a negro of Emma, this county has been arrested by Deputy United States Marshal .Iordan for retailing liquor. He was given a hearing before United States Commissioner Me Call and bound over for trial at the special term of Federal court to open here Feb. 20. News was received here Satur day afternoon of the death at Bushn«^l in Swain county, of Sam uel B. Sawyer, brother of Captain J. P. Sawyer of Asheville. Mr. Saw’yer’s death occurred Friday night. “Shad Link” the wrestler from Baltiaiore and his manager C. W. Weiss are expected here the lat ter part of the month when Link will enter into training with a live bull to get himself in shape for the coming match with Chas. Olsen. The training exhibition w ill be free to all. There is con siderable talk in sjwrting circles o!i this style of ti’aining. The Olsen-Link w’restling match has been booked for March 7th. The tirst decision under the new’ ruling of the Supreme Court of thc‘ Ignited States was us(^d by JudgePritchai d during this tei-m of Fed(‘ral court h(;re. Judge Pritchard remanded Penland- Kent Co. rase back to thevSu])eri or court of Yancey county on tiie grounds that local pi-ejudice is not sufficient grounds to ri‘ move a case from the Circuit courts to tlie federal courts es pecially when one of the defend ants is a resident of tiie state. The Hon. Hope Elias of Govern ors Island. Swain conrty, N C., is one of the defendants. Asheville has been visited by several gentlemen within tiie ]>ast we(‘k who have contributed g(Jod ly sums toward lh(' school fund. One of these benevolently in lin ed gentlemen is a resident of Mitchell county and the other hails from the pretty mountain village of Bushnell. Swain coun ty, N. C. Although they ar(‘ un known to each oth('r and comi' from widely different parts. th{‘\ both seenuHl to have thesani'^' ob ject in view, to drink upalitho liquor in Asheville. Both landed in the city lock up and in the morning paid a tine and cost for the ti'ouble tliey gave the officers. Four Stump Town negro can! players were gathered into the police net several days ago and carted to the lock-u[). .ludge Jon(‘s imposed a tine of siM.GO and cost. This makes the second covey of card manipulators drag ged from cover this week by the police and sheriff. It is said that the survey on the proposed railroad from Tennes see via. Burnsville in Yancey county to Asheville is progres sing linely The survey has al ready i-each d Paint Gap by the way of Democrat. This road will mean much for the country through which it will run and greatly benetit Asheville. It is no\v positively known that Asheville is to have a large w’ood veneering plant. Asheville could stand a few’ more factories with out complaining. But at the present w’riting there seems to be more talk going on over what is going to be done in the line of new’’ factories for this place and little else. It is hoi>3d that some of the gigantic ])rojects will ap {)ear in the near future otherwise than on paper. William L. Smith, an employee of the Boyce-Buchanan Lumber Company, was crushed to death one day last w’eek near Balsam while assisting a logging gang. Mr. Smith was from 15ig Stone Gap, Va., and '21 years of age. His remains have been shipped to his former home for burial. Policy holders of the Virginia Life Insurance Company have en tered suit against that company claiming that the policies do not fultill their exv>ectation and that they w’ere missrej^resented to them by agents of the comi)any. The agents statements gave dif ferent ideas I rom the w’ording of the i3oiicies so it is claimed. Wliy Don’t Yoy Say So? The stockmen and railroads have a pow’erful lobby in Wasii ington endeavoring to pjiss a bill extending ttie time that catth may be held in cars without food and water fi-om tv.’enty eight hours as und(!r the present law to thirty six hours. Protests ar^ l)ouring in from all parts of the United States against the passage of ttie bill. There is nior<‘ C'atarrh in tl'.is sec- tioti of the contiry than all other dis eases put together, and until the la>:t few’ years was supposed to he incui- able. For a great many years doctors pronounced it a local disetise and pre.>^cril)H(l ](>cal remedies, and hy constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pronounced it inein’able.
